Calm, serene, green. Surrounded by trees that reach toward the heavens. Skirt blowing, unsure if it’s the breeze or the movement of my steps or a combination of both. Thoughts flow freely here, undeterred by the constant stream of information from social media, television, radio. Even music sends messages. It’s here that the air is crisp and my ideas are clear. You can feel the wind brush your fingertips, and know that it’s not man-made, but God-made. Is this what hippies feel like, when they’re withdrawn from their drugs and music? Misunderstood? Smothered voices? Alone, but at peace? They say you’ve got to know your place in the universe, because we’re only a speck in this enormous universe. And if that’s true, a lot of things in our life are of little consequence. Because that’s true, the people around us are just as important as us if not more important, because the ecosystem is about everything working together. And in the truth of it all, I wonder if we might be meant to spend our life doing as much as we can to ensure that at least another life on earth can be better. If we focus on just one life, one story, one tall tree, one bird’s feather, one dead squirrel, one man’s smile, we see that they’re all beautiful, worthwhile. Because for all it’s worth, I’m just one person, but so are they. I think of these things until pretty soon, I’m home.
